How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they give you a wonderful view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your home. Because they are so key to a home, they see a lot of action. It’s important to keep your windows clean so that continue to enhance your home.

Window glass can get dirty pretty quickly, especially with little hands or pets in the home, but lucky for you glass cleaning isn’t that hard. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from inside your home, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. Start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and cleaning it out will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning rag that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces in. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your glass. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from a variety of different directions for the best clean.
  4. Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if there are any streaks left.

Here are some more tips, too! We suggest that you clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too fast and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean in every season.
